DESCRIPTION:
APW - Waltham, Appleton Tracy & Co, Civil War era, 15J, Model 1857, 18S, decagonal (ten-sided) original A.W.Co. HC with eagle hallmark, front with detailed hunting scene of a dog in pursuit of a fox, pumpkin style pendant, cuvette with attractive foliate engraving around winding position, white enamel SS dial, KWKS (a key is included as pictured), gilt mvt, s#132897. An eye-catching and attractive original Civil War era example highlighted by its unusual early decagonal case, this watch is from a production run listed in Waltham factory records as having been finished between September of 1864 and February of 1865.
CONDITION:
Mvt: Running, winding key attempts to retract frequently while winding suggesting a likely click and/or click spring issue, overhaul recommended for this issue, fine cosmetic mvt condition overall, gilt plates with dulled tone, scattered surface spots, oxide to hairspring stud and portions of regulator, case screw is a replacement with smaller head; dial with hls within left side of seconds-register, hl at 5, hl above seconds-register, some tiny edge nicks outside minute chapter; excellent hour hand, fine seconds-hand with ample finish loss, poor minute hand is short, bent, and has finish loss; case shows very little wear, an attractive darkened patina, fine scratches and abrasions to rear, excellent engraving detail, case front and rear open somewhat short of 90 degrees (to approximately 80 degrees each); tight bow, push shows light wear; good glass crystal.
